Loxone Heating & Climate Automation — the house keeps the perfect temperature all by itself

Not a smart thermostat you adjust from an app: a self-learning system that heats and cools room by room, adapted to your actual presence — all by itself.

Heating is the biggest energy cost in most homes — and this is exactly where Loxone can help the most. Not a smart thermostat you adjust from an app: a self-learning system that heats and cools room by room, adapted to your actual presence — automatically.

Why is this different from a smart thermostat?

If you've heard of a smart thermostat, you probably picture this: set the desired temperature from an app, maybe configure some schedules. Useful — but Loxone goes far beyond that.

A smart thermostat measures temperature at a single point and switches one heating circuit on and off. Loxone, by contrast, manages the entire home's thermal comfort as one: each room as its own zone, coordinated with lighting, shading, and the current weather. The system's "brain", the Loxone Miniserver, doesn't just execute commands — it makes decisions based on the real situation.

As installers, we see this most clearly: after the first heating season, customers typically say they thought about their heating less than ever before — and yet the house was always the right temperature when they arrived.

1. Zone-by-zone, presence-based heating

Loxone treats every room as an independent zone. The living room heats during the day when you're there; the bedroom warms up more towards the evening; the guest room doesn't run needlessly when nobody's in it.

The system doesn't do this based on schedules — it decides based on presence sensors and actual occupancy patterns. If a room is empty, it automatically switches to economy mode — and when someone is detected, it rises back to the comfort temperature. You don't have to adjust anything.

2. It learns — no programming required

With most "smart" heating systems, you have to set up schedules at the beginning: when you're home, when you leave, when the temperature should rise. These need constant updating whenever your routine changes.

Loxone works differently. It learns your daily rhythm: it notices when you typically arrive home, and schedules pre-heating around that. When you leave — via your phone's GPS or a manual "I'm heading home" signal — the system switches to economy mode so you're not heating an empty house.

The result: the house is always warm when you walk in, but not a single kilowatt-hour is wasted while you're away.

3. Works with any heat source

One of the most common questions: "Is this only for new builds, or can it control my existing heating?"

The answer: Loxone is not a replacement — it's a control layer. It sits on top of your existing system and directs it, regardless of what heat source you have:

  • Gas boiler, condensing boiler — a classic setup; Loxone precisely controls on/off switching and temperature setpoints
  • Heat pump (air-to-water, ground-source) — an energy-efficient combination; Loxone knows when it makes sense to run the heat pump and when to use electric supplemental heating
  • Underfloor heating — the system is particularly powerful here, because underfloor heating responds slowly; Loxone works with lead time, taking into account that the floor needs to heat up before it becomes comfortable
  • Radiator heating with thermostatic heads — room-by-room control with wired or Air (wireless) thermostat heads
  • Electric heating panels — direct control
  • Air conditioning / split units — for both cooling and heating; Loxone manages them in coordination with shading

4. Arrival detection, outdoor temperature and forecast

Loxone's heating automation doesn't operate in a closed bubble — it monitors the outside world too:

Phone location: When you're on your way home, the system can detect this — and starts heating in time so the right temperature is waiting the moment you walk in. No unnecessary all-day heating, yet always a warm house waiting for you.

Outdoor temperature and weather forecast: If a cold front is approaching, Loxone starts the heating earlier. On mild days, the boiler automatically runs less. All of this happens in the background — you simply notice that it's always comfortable at home.

5. Summer cooling too — the same system

Thermal comfort isn't only about winter. In summer, climate control matters just as much — and Loxone is coordinated with the other systems here too.

Loxone's cooling logic is hierarchical: it relies on shading first, and only switches on the air conditioning when shading is no longer sufficient. This isn't just convenient — it's also significantly more energy-efficient.

In practice, it works like this: when strong sunlight hits, Loxone automatically lowers the shutters to prevent the room from overheating. If the room still reaches a defined temperature threshold, the air conditioning starts exactly there and then — not sooner, not elsewhere.

Summer cooling logic — decision tree
☀️ Strong sunlight lux level / solar radiation detected Miniserver decides Shutters down → T° OK? Shutters ↓ → T° OK ✓ AC OFF shading is sufficient T° > threshold ❄️ AC ON room by room, as needed Energy priority: shading → natural ventilation → AC — only when truly needed

How much can you save?

The biggest savings come from not heating empty rooms and empty hours. Based on experience:

30–40%
heating savings in the first season, under a realistic usage scenario
~2 °C
automatic economy mode when nobody is home
1 app
where the temperature and status of every room is visible at a glance

💡 The exact savings always depend on the individual home: insulation quality, the current heat source, house size and lifestyle all affect the result. That's why we don't throw out a random number — at the free on-site survey, we go through realistic expectations for your specific situation.

Loxone Tree or Air? For new builds and existing homes alike

Loxone Tree (wired) Loxone Air (wireless)
Best when? New build, major renovation Existing home, retrofit installation
Installation With cable runs No cutting or chasing required
Thermostat heads, sensors Wired connection Battery-powered, mountable without any chasing
Reliability Maximum Excellent (encrypted 868 MHz frequency)
Combinable? Yes — both can be used simultaneously

If you're building now or planning a major renovation, integrating heating automation at this stage is the cleanest and most cost-effective solution — the cabling happens anyway. In an existing home, the Air solution lets you retrofit smart heating — thermostat heads and sensors can be installed without drastic building work.

Who is this for?

Loxone heating automation is a great fit if:

  • You're building now and want to plan in heating control from the start (Tree)
  • You want to make your existing home smarter without opening up walls (Air)
  • You have underfloor heating and want to get the most out of it
  • You have a heat pump and want to maximise its efficiency
  • Summer climate control matters to you and you don't want the AC running unnecessarily
  • You travel a lot or are often away and care that the heating doesn't run needlessly
